Hardwood floors are priced depending on the cost of the flooring material and the cost of labor if you opt to have a professional flooring contractor install the floor for you. There are different types of hardwood flooring such as engineered hardwood, solid hard wood flooring and locking hardwood flooring.


The factors that will affect the price of install hardwood floor include the kind of hardwood flooring that you will install, the size of the floor as this will determine how much material that you will buy and the labor. The different types of hardwoods differ in price. Solid hardwoods are the most expensive as compared to engineered and locking hardwood floors. The cost of labor will be dependent on the size of the floor and the experience of your installer. However on average it ranges between $3 and $5 per square foot. The cost of labor will also be dependent on the work that the flooring contractor will be doing. If the contractor will strip old floors, level uneven floors or install plywood, move furniture or have to sand and stain unfinished floors, then this will increase the cost of installing the hardwood floors. For instance if you are installing plywood before installing the hardwood floor, this will cost you on average of $2 per square foot of the plywood. If you opt to install borders, the contractor may charge you additional fees. These are charged per linear foot as opposed to per square foot and the average cost per linear foot is $3.

Other costs that you may incur while installing a hardwood floor include supplies such as underlayment, fasteners, adhesives, nails, surface sealants and other supplies depending on the type and method of installation that you will use. If you are doing the installation yourself, you may have to hire specialized equipment. The cost of this will be dependent on the duration of time that you will need to use the equipment and where you will hire it from.
